August is drawing to a close, summer holidays are coming to an end and September often brings a shift back into a more regular working routine.

Before Q4 gets properly underway, it’s a useful time to take stock of where your business is now, what the rest of the year looks like and what you’d like to have in place before January arrives.

That doesn’t need to mean a huge end-of-year review. A few practical checks now can give you a much clearer picture of your finances, priorities and plans for the months ahead.

Here are a few areas worth looking at as we head towards the final quarter.

1. Take a Proper Look at Your Finances

Start with the numbers.

Take some time to review your income and expenditure so far this year, check your current cash flow and look at any significant costs or tax liabilities coming up.

It’s also a good opportunity to chase outstanding invoices, review regular expenses and subscriptions and make sure your bookkeeping is up to date.

If you use accounting software such as Xero, having your records updated regularly means you can see a much clearer picture of how the business is performing rather than waiting until your year-end accounts are prepared.

And if something in the numbers doesn’t look quite how you expected, speaking to your accountant now gives you time to understand why and decide whether anything needs to change.

2. Know What the Rest of the Year Looks Like

Q4 can look completely different from one business to the next.

For some, it’s the busiest trading period of the year. For others, things begin to quieten down as Christmas approaches. You may have seasonal demand to prepare for, staff holidays to manage, upcoming tax deadlines or larger expenses planned before the end of the year.

Looking at all of this together can help you plan your cash flow, workload and resources more realistically.

It’s also worth getting key dates into the diary now. That might include accounting and tax deadlines, Christmas closures, team meetings, events, training or important client projects.

The more you can see coming, the easier it is to plan around it.

3. Get the Team Together

The start of September is also a good opportunity to get everyone in the same room.

A Q4 planning session doesn’t need to be complicated. It can simply be a chance to look at where you are, what needs your attention over the next few months and what everyone is working towards.

You might use the time to discuss what’s gone well so far this year, priorities for Q4, upcoming projects and the first ideas for 2027.

Getting away from the usual working environment can help too. At Venton Conference Centre, our meeting and conference spaces can accommodate everything from smaller strategy sessions to larger team days, with breakout spaces, on-site catering and the technology you need to make the day run smoothly. 4. Look at What’s Working

Planning ahead can quickly turn into a conversation about everything you want to change, but it’s just as useful to look at what’s already working well.

Which services or products have performed particularly well? Where have your strongest leads or customers come from? Have you introduced a process that’s saved your team time? Is there something you’ve done this year that you’d like to do more of?

Understanding your successes can be just as valuable as identifying the areas that need attention.

It also gives you a stronger starting point for Q4 and your plans for the year ahead. Rather than changing things for the sake of it, you can build on what’s already delivering results.

5. Tackle the Admin That’s Been Building Up

We all have those jobs that keep getting moved to next week.

If your bookkeeping is behind, receipts need uploading, invoices need chasing or there are systems and processes you’ve been meaning to tidy up, September is a good opportunity to get back on top of them.

This is particularly important as businesses continue to move towards more regular digital record keeping and reporting. Keeping your financial records organised throughout the year makes it much easier to understand your position, plan for tax and avoid a big bookkeeping job later on.

Even setting aside a small amount of time each week can make a noticeable difference by the end of the year.

6. Start the 2027 Conversation

January might still feel a little way off, but you don’t have to wait until the new year to start thinking about what comes next.

Q4 is a useful time to begin conversations around next year’s budgets, investments, recruitment, training, projects and growth plans.

If you’re considering a significant purchase or investment, it can also be worth speaking to your accountant while you’re planning it. Understanding the financial and tax implications beforehand can help you make a much more informed decision.

The same applies to your wider team. Starting those conversations now gives everyone time to contribute, develop ideas and head into January with a clearer direction.

A Good Time to Take Stock

Heading into Q4 doesn’t need to mean a frantic push to get everything finished before Christmas. It’s an opportunity to understand where your business stands, decide what deserves your attention over the next few months and start thinking about what comes next.

Whether that means sitting down with your accountant to review the numbers or getting your team together for a planning day, putting some time aside now can make the final quarter feel much more considered.

At Venton, we can help with both. Our accountancy team can help you understand your finances and plan ahead, while our Conference Centre provides purpose-built meeting and conference spaces for bringing your team together and having those important conversations.
